2011 The China Soong Ching Ling Foundation established a new fund: The China Beauty Charity Fund
The China Soong Ching Ling Foundation established in Beijing in 1982 under the direction of the Chinese Government, is one of the most important and trusted charitable foundations in China. The organization was founded in memory of Madam Soong Ching Ling, the late wife of the founder of China, Dr. Sun Yat-sen. During her lifetime Madam Sun founded schools, hospitals and also hosted many cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries. She devoted her life to the betterment of the women and children in China.
Yue-Sai Kan has been actively involved with Charities and the Soong Ching Ling for many years. To recognize the many charitable and social contributions of Yue-Sai Kan in the Chinese society over the past few decades, the China Soong Ching Ling Foundation established the China Beauty Charity Fund. Yue-Sai will serve as the China Beauty Fund ambassador and the Chairman of its governing committees. This is a tremendous and rare honor, since the Chinese Government usually does not create charity for individuals, especially for a non-Chinese citizen (Yue-Sai is a citizen of the United States). To ensure transparency and accountability, all funds collected and used on behalf of the China Beauty Charity Fund will be monitored under a separate financial statement and audited by the leading global accounting firm of Ernst & Young, which has volunteered to be an independent external auditing partner.
The mission of the China Beauty Foundation is to support the following areas:
-
Relevant charity activities of Miss Universe China
-
International academic and cultural exchanges as it relates to health and education
-
TV and Film productions and education in this area
-
Education of the esthetics of beauty and the welfare of women and children
-
Charity projects for woman and child. e.g. Safety for Mother and Child project
-
Finance other public welfare work which conforms to the aims of the Fund as approved by the governing committee.
The Beauty Fund is presently forming two distinguished committees. The first is an International Committee consisting of outstanding internationally renowned individuals, who have helped make the world a more "beautiful" place. Such a member is Music Legend Quincy Jones. Another Domestic Committee will be made up of personalities in the world of arts, music, architecture, beauty and film, who have also beautified China. These committees will help to identify other worthy causes and develop ties with individuals around the World who can provide support to these programs.
In 2012, there are three major donations from the Charity fund:
-
To benefit the "children and pregnant women safety program" with which Yue-Sai has worked for many years. This program assists some of the poorest rural areas of China, including Guangxi Province, where the mortality rate for babies is 15%. This high mortality rate for babies, and sometimes even the death of the mother when giving birth, results from various factors such as child delivery in unsanitary conditions. For years the China Soong Ching Ling Foundation has been building or improving clinics to address these needs. Last November Yue-Sai chaired the Shanghai Soong Ching Ling Foundation charity, raising a total of 1.5 million USD. The money assisted a total 10 hospitals in Guangxi Province and 4 hospitals in Yunan Province to procure ambulances, medical equipment and trained doctors.
-
To benefit Operation Smile, an organization which helps fund surgeries for children with Cleft Lip. This is part of the global initiative of Miss Universe Organization. Already in China the organization has done thousands of surgeries to improve lives. Miss Universe China will be responsible for at least 500 surgeries this year.
-
To benefit the 15th Shanghai International Film Festival. SIFF is the most important annual film festival in China, under the auspicius of the Ministry of Culture. Yue-Sai has been involved as the head of Celebrity Invitation committee for 6 years. This year, the China Beauty Charity Fund will be providing four scholarships in the total amount of RMB 2 million to provide hard costs to four female directors to create movies that speak to women’s and society's issues.
The first big event of this new charity is the Charity Coronation Ball of Miss Universe China slated for June 18, 2012. All proceeds will go to benefit the Beauty Charity. About 1,000 of the most important people in China will attend this most prestigious and glamorous event in Shanghai in 2012.
The Beauty Charity encourages your participation in all areas from donation to volunteering. For more details, please contact Eva Su at suchang.eva@gmail.com, or go to missuniversechina.com.
