“Yue-Sai changed the face of China, one lipstick at a time.”
——Forbes magazine
In 1990, Yue-Sai Kan registered the first 100% foreign-owned cosmetics company in China. ( Before that, all cosmetics companies in China were joint ventures, i.e. foreign company with a local Chinese partner.) Yue-Sai wanted to establish the first global Chinese brand of cosmetics made with the slogans "the Best the World has to offer for Asians" and "the Best China has to offer to the World!" She built the first factory in Shenzhen, and subsequently the second factory in Shanghai.
From zero, Yue-Sai built the brand into the number one brand by 1996, and for a number of years, the most favourite cosmetics brand voted by the Chinese consumers, enjoying an astonishing 95% brand recognition! By then, Yue Sai Cosmetics had over 600 employees doing over 27 million dollars of sales with offices in 14 cities. To help facilitate growth and to protect her #1 position, she took on a partner in Coty, the famous French cosmetics company owned by the German Benkeiser company. Soon a 20-million, state-of-the-art 300,000-square-feet manufacturing factory was built in Pudong, Shanghai.
In June, 2004, L'Oreal, the largest cosmetics company in the world bought Yue Sai Cometics from Coty and Yue-Sai. Yue-Sai stayed on as Honorary Vice Chairman, L'Oreal China, for the Yue Sai Brand.
